E-Journal : Power of the Pen
FEMRITE - Uganda Women Writers Association is an indigenous non-governmental organisation that promotes women writing in Uganda. It started operations in 1995, and officially launched on 3rd May 1996 at the Uganda National Cultural Centre. It was founded by a small group of women under the leadership of Hon Mary Karoro Okurut and with the aim of creating an enabling atmosphere for women to write, tell and publish their stories. From July 1997 to 2002, FEMRITE published a print magazine called New Era. When it was disbanded, FEMRITE embarked on a publication of a print journal called Wordwrite, until 2004 when the organisation could not continue with its publication. This is an exciting time as well as a moment of great expectation for FEMRITE as another journey of the publication of this e-journal begins. It may look like a small step, but I would like to say that it’s a giant step for the organisation because it will now be publishing for a wider readership. African writers, both women and men, need to take advantage of the technology in order to rid itself of the unflattering description of being the dark and unknown continent. My call therefore is for members of FEMRITE and those of the Readers/Writers club to get hold of their pens and tell the mighty tales of Uganda. Take this advantage to be read all over the world. Remember a writer’s pen is a key that opens doors of opportunity, get going; do not let this chance pass you, start writing and post your work on this e-journal. My last word is to wish you all the best of luck in your writing and to you the reader, enjoy the fountains of creativity from the FEMRITE e-journal… |
