19th National Book Week Festival
October 19, 2011
From 10th – 15th October 2011, the National Book Trust of Uganda (NABOTU) along with stakeholder partners organized the 19th National Book Week Festival at Garden City roof top, Kampala. The theme for 2011 was ‘Books bridging gaps’.

The activities in the book week included regional festivities in different parts of the country like the literary expedition organized by the National Library of Uganda in Gulu town on 7th October 2011, a discussion on student reading habits in Ugandan schools, the Kampala Book fair from 12th – 15th October organized by Uganda Publishers Association (UPA), a public reading organized by Uganda Women Writers Association (FEMRITE) and the city children’s reading tent organized by Uganda Children’s Writers and Illustrators Association (UCWIA).

The discussion about reading kicked off a debate on whether the government of Uganda and its arm in charge of education has failed to ensure that reading standards amongst primary and secondary school students are not on the decline. The topic of discussion was ‘Is the decline in literacy in schools a gross failure by government to support reading’.

The Kampala Book fair kicked off on Wednesday 12th with festivities that included students from Kitante Primary School and Buganda Road Primary School performing Ugandan cultural dances. The Kampala Book fair was declared open by the guest of honour, commissioner in the MoES in charge of procurement. Some 25 publishers and exhibitors took part in this year’s fair that attracted close to 2,000 visitors.

FEMRITE organized the public reading featuring some of Uganda’s best creative masters in poetry and fiction writing. Guest readers included Beverley Nambozo who recited poetry from her book ‘Unjumping’, Bake Robert – a motivational writer, Paschal Odong-Lela – a poet, Beatrice Lamwaka who read ‘Butterfly Dreams’ which was shortlisted for the 2011 Caine Prize for African writing , Jocelyn Ekochu who read from her book ‘shockwaves across the ocean’, Doreen Baingana, and Dr. Chris Kirunda. The executive secretary of NABOTU, Charles Batambuze, used the public reading to promote Uganda Reproduction Rights Organisation (URRO) which has been formed to protect the reproduction rights of authors.

The highlight activity for primary school children was the city children’s reading tent that was organized and run by UCWIA. Some 16 schools from the Kampala suburbs participated in the reading tent. Fun activities for the children included reading, writing stories, clay modeling, interactive games, singing and designing using banana fibers.

The 19th National Book Week Festival was supported by hivos, EABDA, Book Aid International, SIDA and Children International.
