FEMRITE WEEK OF LITERARY ACTIVITIES 2012
July 02, 2012
FEMRITE: Uganda Women Writers Association is back with the 13th Week of Literary Activities under the theme ‘poetry for freedom learning and life’ to showcase Uganda’s vibrant and growing literary culture. The week will feature 5 major activities from 9th to 13th July 2012;

1. A public dialogue on the theme; 50 years after independence; where is the Ugandan writer?
2. Uganda U.K. poetry performance featuring Guest Poet and Performer Francesca Beard
3. A 3-day creative writing and poetry performance workshop
4. A week-long secondary schools’ writing clinic for five selected schools
5. Poetry bonfire night with lots of prizes to be won.

The public dialogue will be held on Monday 9th July 2012 at the National Theatre from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. The moderator will be Dr. Patrick Mangeni with panelists; Dr Chris Kirunda, Kevin Kezabu, Dr Abasi Kiyimba and Robert Serumaga. The panel will discuss the state and development of Ugandan literature 50 years on after independence. They will also reflect on the 1962 Writers Conference that was held at Makerere when Prof Taban lo Liong referred to Uganda as a literary desert. The dialogue will be preceded by performances from across generations; Okot p Bitek, Henry Barlow, Cliff Lubwa Pchong, Rugambwa Otim, Prof Rose Mbowa and other poets.

The Uganda U.K poetry evening will be held on Thursday 12th featuring Francesca Beard performing what her funs have described as spine tingling poetry. She will be accompanied by some participants from the writing workshop as well as readings from some of the best poetry from the U.K. The venue is Nob View Hotel in Ntinda, 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

The 3-day creative writing and poetry performance workshop will be held from 10th to 12th July. Participation in the workshop is by applying.

School writing clinics will be held in five selected schools. The aim of the clinics is to build new writing generations and reading audiences in schools.

The poetry bonfire night will bring to life voices of Ugandan poets, musicians and story tellers at the Uganda Museum from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Barbeque and drinks will be on sell. There will be a raffle draw with tickets at 5,000UGX only! Lots of prizes to win. All proceeds from the raffle will be spent on a charity cause with Uganda School for the Deaf, Ntinda.

The Chief Guest of the Week, Ms. Francesca Beard is an exceptional performance poet based in the U.K. She is of Malaysian origin and has since 1999 been a performer of live poetry and has facilitated workshops in several countries including Thailand, Germany, Poland, Philippines and Malaysia. Beard won the international slam for poetry at the Biennale in Turin in 2002 for her poem Rehabilitation which has been described as spine tingling.

The 2012 Week of Literary Activities 2012 is supported by Stitching DOEN, British Council, Writers Centre Norwich, Cafe PAP, National Theatre, Uganda Museum and Aristoc Booklex
