New poetry book especially for children August 27, 2010
A third book in the Poetry Poster Project is now available. The book titled The Butterfly Dance, words and sounds of colour celebrates the power and beauty of children's poetry written by mothers and fathers, teachers and tutors, sisters and brothers. The poems explore many themes ranging from playing with grandpa, the love for papa and sweet mother and the duty of protecting a little brother.
The book embraces garden and farm experiences, enjoying tropical fruits. There are conversations with insects and birds, memories of times, places and country; the love for books, for school, naughty classroom experiences as well as facing up to school bullies, and the dangers of dodging classes to go swimming! The anthology celebrates games like skipping, counting, dancing, drumming and letter writing. Taken together, the poems, songs and stories in this collection capture a wide range of children’s experiences from so many angles in a very interesting and playful manner.
Poetry is pleasure! The poems in this collection were selected for their ability to sustain children’s interest through musicality. This anthology invites the reader to enjoy 39 poems, 18 of which have been beautifully illustrated with accompanying paintings by Uganda's best painters, and three with accompanying music. This is a great innovation because the visual imagery that is usually seen with the minds eyes can be seen within these pages with the naked eye, enhancing the enjoyment of poetry for the readers. Musical accompaniment creates a performance setting complete with mood and atmosphere which a dry poem on the page lacks. This inter-textual celebration of words, pictures and music produces living poetry and makes the poetic experience memorable for readers. For those who enjoy stories the book contains 3, one with a painting illustration. The anthology has a teacher’s guide with sample questions to stimulate class, group and individual exploration of the poems and short stories.
During the past decade, in Uganda, more and more children’s literature has been produced to fill a gaping hole in our written literary heritage, yet the literature has mostly focused on short stories, or written reproductions of traditional folk tales and fables. Poetry is virtually neglected. Given the great need, this anthology is a mere drop in the ocean, but quite a significant drop nonetheless. We hope The Butterfly Dance will make a contribution towards filling this void.
